The competitiveness of the agricultural farms is a key problem and its actuality augments with Bulgaria's accession to the EU. To be competitive means that agricultural farms will not only have the opportunity to survive in the new economic environment but that they would also have perspectives for efficient and sustainable development.
The aim of the study is to evaluate agricultural farms' competitiveness and to sketch the new perspectives of their development regarding the conditions of the Common Agriculturasl Policy (CAP) after the accession of Bulgaria to the EU.
This evaluation is presented by the following items:
- Efficiency including both the production and management efficiencies. The study leads to the conclusion that all kinds of farms possess the potential for augmenting their efficiency through improving the resource productivity and by lowering the transaction costs as well.
- Farms' sustainability, their vitality and adaption to the business enironment. The presented herewith study shows that the large farms are the most sustainable.
- Opportunities for developing separate organization structures with the changing institutional environment related to the Bulgaria's accession to the EU. It is expected that the application of the Common Agricultural Policy would positively impact the farms by increasing and stabilising their incomes, improving their market orientation, enterpreneural freedom and efficiency. There are discussed factors which will limit the Bulgarian famers' income growth. There are indicated the potential dangers regarding agricultural farms direct payments acquisition.
At the end there is made the conclusion that a significant part of the agricultural farms are not competitive and that in spite of the expected subsidization by the EU funds, they will continue restructuring themselves, will cease the activity or will transfer to other organizational forms. For these economic structures and sectors which we will develop, there is needed a purposeful agricultural policy and an active support by the State.
