The Sheep-breeding is an important and traditional branch of stock-breeding in Bulgaria. The various products received - wool, milk, meat are valuable and they are used in life, industry and trade.
The main purpose of this study of the analysis is the development of sheep-breeding during the years of transition to market economy as well as the influence of the market of sheep products on selection activity.
In this regard analyses of statistical data, publications, articles and reports were carried out.
The main conclusions of this study are:
- the new market situation determines the interest of selectionists and producers towards genetic improvement of selection traits with high economic value which contribute to bigger profit which is the purpose of selection;
- in coming years the main selection activity will be carried out in small private farms under the control and assistance of the breeding associations;
- the demand of lamb-meat and products of sheep milk on the internal and international markets for the period 1999-2004 is characterized with relatively stable market prices and quantities produced in our country;
- the economic conditions in the observed period determine the interest of producers towards breeds for milk with high fertility and breeds for meet.
