This publication examines the discussion of sustainable agriculture in the literature, the difficulties of assessment of sustainability and to what extent organic farming is sustainable. It presents different definitions about sustainable and organic farming. The aim is to analyze the contribution of organic farming to sustainable development in agriculture, to examine the role of standards, regulations and the use of synthetic agrochemicals, to review the issues of degree of self reliance of agriculture systems, the productivity and the trade with food in the context of sustainability. When analyzing the relationship between organic and sustainable farming is necessary to define what exactly the consideration about sustainability, to determine the limits of agricultural systems is, the degree of isolation from other world, to what level is made the assessment of the sustainability, which indicators are used and what is the reviewed period.
The reason for the focus on organic farming is the rapid development of the sector in Europe and North America and its role for achieving the goals of sustainable agriculture. Generally organic farming responds to the main requirements for sustainability, i.e. to be economically viable, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable. Analyze of the economic viability of organic agriculture is used the indicators like prices, policy support in some countries, yields and effectiveness. The analysis of environmental effects of organic agriculture in the different studies is made on the base of similar environmental indicators biodiversity, climate, soils, waters, nutrient balance, energy effectiveness etc. The social acceptability is considered in the context of food security, animal welfare and the rural development. It also reviews the main trends of sustainable development of organic farming: stimulate organic farming by policy support; to compensate the farmers for the positive benefits as a result of applied environmentally friendly practices; the use of scientific methods and strategies for management of resources; better information about farmers; the collaboration between the farmers to surmount the difficulties. The conclusion is that the sustainability can be improved by dissemination of organic practices in agriculture.
